Communication in Groups and Organizations

I thought this reading was interesting (and also good practical knowledge) for one particular reason. It seemed that all of these strategies such as smiling, touching, leaving cute drawings or notes, are all used to serve a greater singular purpose. I believe these strategies reduce the barrier that exists due to the social roles that each of us play when we enter a restaurant. As soon as we enter a restaurant, we become the role of a customers, while we perceive our server as a server, while the server views us as customers. Rather than seeing each other as people without any particular roles, we have preconceived notions and schemas of people based on their roles in a situation. I believe these strategies serve to partially remove the layers that mold us in to these social roles. By viewing our servers as friendly nice people, we tend to forget that they are just serving us to make a living, but that they are people just like us which may cause us to increase our tips once we empthasize with them more.
