Communication in Groups and Organizations

Considering we're still undergrad, has anyone actively used their network to advanced their careers/work experience (get a job, promotion, research position, etc.)?

I know my first job after high school I was hired because I knew the family pretty well but it was only landscaping.

In terms of internships/job offers I went through the general candidate pool without aid of someone in my network.
